Video: Five classic business-writing blunders

Every month I edit up to 80 writing samples from various businesses, as part of our training courses. I see the same five problems so often that I just KNOW you're doing some of them!

They're dangerous because they disengage readers and make you sound boring.

Robert Gerrish from BNET interviewed me about them recently. Here are five tips in five minutes:

BRAIN GYM: De-blunder your writing

Now you know the five top ways to sharpen your writing, you'll be fine, right?

Hmm, maybe not. How you write is a habit, and, like any habit, takes time and effort to change. "If you don't use it, you lose it" applies to any new writing skill.

So print the five tips, put them on the wall next to your monitor, and refer to them often — especially when you're writing. Before long, they'll be second nature, and you'll be seeing problems with everybody else's writing!

Here they are, as "what to do" instead of "what not to do":

  1. Lead with the "big news"
  2. Use natural language
  3. Use more verbs and fewer nouns
  4. Use shorter sentences (average 15 words)
  5. Use "active voice"
